Phil Spencer fully supports Xbox studios that want to revive classic games
Speaking on the Xbox podcast, Phil Spencer has discussed how the company plans to leverage its vast catalog of Activision Blizzard games.
The number of franchises we have in our portfolio right now is quite inspiring and daunting. I feel that we have to be good custodians of the content that we touch. These are memories from people on different platforms, different decades.
I want to make sure that when we go back and visit something, we do it with our full capabilities, a motivated team that wants to work on something and make a difference, not just make something for financial gain, or make something for a PR announcement and not deliver the product.
So, I’ll start with the team, what they like, and that’s why I’m excited to do this [studio] visit and then we’ll see.So, I’ll start with the team, what they like, and that’s why I’m excited to do this [studio] visit and then we’ll see.
I think we’ve done a good job as Xbox, I don’t think we’ve done an A+ job in looking at our franchises and revisiting them. There’s always a trade-off between what you do that’s new and going back and doing something.
I think with Game Pass, we have the ability to pick a few franchises every year and almost do a “revisit” – I just made that term up, so it’s not a brand, it’s not on a box.
But you know, I tease about things like Hexen just because I remember playing it as a kid. I don’t have plans for that, but I think when you look at all the franchises that are part of our team, there’s an opportunity for us to go back, even if it’s just to recognize the moment and what those things mean in gaming history, and do something right with them, make them available to people through Game Pass. I think there’s an opportunity – there’s no plan for it – but there’s an opportunity.

Spencer then added that he would fully support the studio revisiting classic games if that’s the direction it wants to take, “because I think there’s an awful lot of great stuff that we could go back and touch”.
However, Spencer noted that this is not something mandated by Xbox.

This is also true across Xbox Game Studios and ZeniMax Media, not just Activision Blizzard. Spencer went on to praise the work done by Bethesda on the Quake II Remaster.
