EA: The Sims 5/Project Rene Will Free-to-Play

Lyndsay Pearson, VP of creative for The Sims franchise at Maxis Studios. has confirmed in their latest video that Project Rene “will be free to download“.

We intend for Project Rene to be downloadable for free and that means when it’s ready and fully open to players, you’ll be able to join and play and explore Project Rene with no subscription required, no core game purchases or energy mechanics.

We want to make it easy for you to invite or join friends and that means extending an open invitation for everyone to play.

We’re developing this game in different ways and we’re inviting everyone to join us, which means there are many different phases of development, which can include everything from closed invites and small public tests to large-scale early access options.

And yes, when Project Rene is ready, the game will be available for download for free.

Pearson also noted that at launch, Project Rene will not have as many features as The Sims 4.

We want to focus on building something strong and cohesive from the start, so it definitely won’t start with everything in The Sims 4, but we will add new experiences and content to Project Rene over time.

Project Rene and The Sims 4 will continue to run side by side. We plan to support both simultaneously, and we will continue to bring more exciting content to The Sims 4 in the future.
