Valve Punishes 40.000 DOTA 2 Cheater Accounts

In a blog post, Valve revealed that they have patched a known issue used by third-party software to cheat in DOTA 2 while setting traps to catch players using this exploit.

According to Valve, the software gives an unfair advantage to their users by accessing information used internally by DOTA 2 clients that should not be visible during gameplay.

After investigating how the software works, Valve decided to identify and remove the “bad actors” from the active DOTA 2 player base.

Valve claims that the 40k accounts now penalized had accessed this hidden piece of data and that they have “very high confidence that each penalty was deserved”.

Valve also highlighted that the number of accounts banned was significant due to how prevalent cheating is and that the action taken was just one step in their campaign.

While the battle against cheaters and cheat developers often takes place in the shadows, we wanted to make this example visible and use it to make our position clear: If you run any application that reads data from the DOTA 2 client while you are playing the game, your account may be permanently banned from playing DOTA 2.
