Atlus Teases Several New Titles in 2023

Atlus, the developer and publisher behind the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei franchises, has said that it has several titles planned to be announced during 2023.

The message was shared in a new year greeting card published by Famitsu:

Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement for the remastered version of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax in 2022, the Nintendo Switch version of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, Soul Hackers 2, and the remastered version of Persona 5 Royal. Thanks to your support, the remastered version of Persona 5 Royal reached 1 million sales within 1 month of its release and Persona 5 Royal as a whole has surpassed 3.3 million units worldwide.

In 2023, we will start by releasing remastered versions of Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden, and we are also preparing some new titles that have yet to be announced. Please look forward to it!

Persona Central added that Atlus had made a similar statement for their 2019 new year greeting card. At the time, Atlus announced several games such as Catherine Classic, Persona 5 Royal, Persona 5 Strikers, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions ♯FE Encore.

In July 2021, an interview with Naoto Hiraoka revealed that Atlus has around 5 to 6 internal development projects, with around 10 projects if collaborations with other companies are included.

In a Famitsu article highlighting developer Atlus’ aspirations for 2023, Shinjiro Takada expressed gratitude to fans for the 31st anniversary of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. Kazuhisa Wada then implied that the team is moving forward with their projects in a more solid manner.

So what are the projects that Atlus might be developing?

  • Persona: In September 2020, a job posting sought technical artists with Unreal Engine experience. This could imply new Persona titles will use Unreal Engine in the future.
  • Etrian Odyssey: The “Next Stage” of Etrian Odyssey was teased back in July 2018. With only a brief teaser trailer, substantial updates for this upcoming project have yet to be given.
  • Vanillaware’s new project: A new Vanillaware project has been teased with the release of the demo of 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Prologue in March 2019. Since then, no details have been given about this project.
  • Project Re Fantasy: In December 2020, Katsura Hashino stated that the development of Project Re Fantasy had reached its “climax”.
