Atlus Sues MMO ReIMAGINE, a Fan-Made Server of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine

Recent reports reveal that Atlus is suing the MMORPG ReIMAGINE, a fan-made server based on Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine.

Atlus sues MMO ReIMAGINE, why?

Atlus has reportedly sued fans who host their own servers for the MMO Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine. The lawsuit was first filed in December 2021, but has recently progressed to the point where the defendants behind the unofficial fan servers have been summoned to appear in court.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine is an MMORPG set in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo, where players can explore locations and complete missions in a loot hunt.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine was first released in Japan in 2007, followed by North America and Europe in 2008 and 2009. On May 24, 2016, Atlus shut down the game’s servers.

In 2020, some fans opened a private server called ReIMAGINE. Rekuiemu and COMP_Hack bring Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine back to life with a launcher, website, and servers that mimic the original game.

Rekuiemu and COMP_Hack are the defendants named in Atlus’ lawsuit documents.

Discord and ReIMAGINE website shut down

According to a statement on ReIMAGINE‘s Discord server, they stated that until recently they were unaware of the lawsuit and now chose to close the server directly. When asked by VGC, Atlus declined to comment.

However, Atlus stated in its lawsuit that it believes the fans behind the unofficial servers “have caused and will continue to cause irreparable harm to Atlus unless restrained by this court”.

Atlus requested the total shutdown of all sites and servers related to the mentioned fan servers along with 25,000 USD per violation decided by the court.
