Vladimir Putin wants Russia to create a game console

RT recently reported that Vladimir Putin instructed the government to “consider the conditions for regulating the production of stationary and portable game consoles in Russia“.

According to RT, the deadline for implementing the order has been set at June 15, 2024.

As part of the order, Putin also asked Russia ‘s cabinet of ministers to consider developing operating systems and cloud systems to deliver games to users.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov explained that the latest order from Putin to consider creating a console aims to develop an indigenous gaming industry in his country.

PCMag.com then reported that Russian newspaper Kommersant said Putin had likely entrusted Russia’s largest tech company, VK, to carry out the plan.

However, market participants said that “there is no competence to produce their own PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and creating such a system from scratch would take up to 10 years”.

Kommersant also claims that a more realistic option would be to buy gaming hardware from China to create a portable console similar to the Steam Deck.
