Ubisoft clarifies that it will not delete accounts containing games
Last week, a screenshot of an Ubisoft email sent people into a panic as it appeared that Ubisoft was planning to delete inactive accounts, including all purchased games, simply because they didn’t log-in to Ubisoft Connect often enough.
The Verge asked if Ubisoft would delete an account if a user hasn’t logged in for 6 months, since the terms of use (terms of use) still clearly say that it can be done, they replied:
Over the years, we have implemented an account deletion process in accordance with the GDPR requirements (Article 5.1.e on the obligation to limit the data retention period). Our policy is aligned with legal requirements and industry standards. This measure also acts as a protection for our players against fraud.
Account deletion follows a very strict process. Therefore, we consider the following 4 criteria before an account is deleted:
- Account game activity since its creation.
- Account library: accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion.
- Duration of account inactivity, meaning the last login to our ecosystem (including from Ubisoft games on Steam and other platforms). In practice, to date, we have never deleted an account that has been inactive for less than 4 years.
- There are active subscriptions associated with the account.
In any case, before the deletion is permanent, 3 emails will be sent to players for 30 days to offer recovery of their accounts. Additionally, if a user attempts to log in during the 30-day period, they will automatically receive a warning and a link to reactivate their account.
Ubisoft
According to The Verge, Ubisoft specifically thickened one criterion on how “accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion”. Notably, logging-in to a non-Ubisoft account like Steam can save your account from deletion.
Interestingly, The Verge got a similar statement as PCWorld in 2021. Ubisoft has yet to update its term of use to reflect these criteria.
PCWorld reports that a gamer who had been inactive for 2 years found his account deleted when he logged back into Ubisoft Connect. When the account was restored, hundreds of dollars of his games were gone. In response to the report from PCWorld, Ubisoft said it would contact the gamer to rectify the situation.
