Ubisoft Blames Technical Error for Pop-Up Ads in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

This week, Reddit users said that they were seeing pop-up ads in the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey Xbox and PlayStation versions, with ads appearing when you navigate to the map screen.

“We are aware that some players encountered pop-up ads while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday,” Ubisoft spokesperson Fabien Darrigues told The Verge. “This was the result of a technical error that we addressed as soon as we became aware of the issue.”

While it was initially unclear why Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was suddenly showing Black Friday pop-up ads, Ubisoft later explained what went wrong in a post on X:

“We have been informed that some players encountered an in-game pop-up message while playing certain Assassin’s Creed titles yesterday. This was the result of a technical glitch that has now been fixed.

Our intention is to feature promotions for Assassin’s Creed Mirage as part of the franchise news in the main menu of other Assassin’s Creed games.

Unfortunately, this technical glitch caused the promotion to appear in one of our in-game menus. We want to ensure the best experience for our players and this annoying pop-up was removed as soon as we became aware of the issue.

We appreciate your understanding as we investigate the cause of this issue.”
