Hidetaka Miyazaki has officially been named as one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people of 2023. VGC also notes that Miyazaki is the second video game developer to be selected for this prestigious list after Shigeru Miyamoto in 2007.
Miyazaki’s selection was written up by Neil Druckmann who praised the developer’s masochistic yet rewarding approach to game design.
The first time I played one of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s games, I was miserable. I kept dying on the first enemy over and over again. But when I slowed down my approach, paying attention to the details, it suddenly worked. I managed to defeat the enemies and advance further into the game. I was gaining progress and felt a kind of rush! As I moved forward in the game, I was much more careful and cautious in exploring this world. In return, the world rewarded me with suspense, beauty and surprises.
That’s why Elden Ring – his wildly popular game 2022 – is such a great ambassador for video games and the unique feelings they can affect in their players, feelings that passive media like TV can never recreate. Miyazaki’s games make players feel accomplished and intelligent – and it’s all thanks to the uncompromising approach he and his team take. He refuses to over-explain the mechanics or lore, but rather trusts the player to figure it out for themselves.

Miyazaki was the creative force behind Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, but it was Elden Ring that took FromSoftware to another level as they began to receive numerous awards, including “Game of the Year” from many video game publications and events.
