Tencent Cancel VR Hardware Plan?
Reuters recently reported that Tencent has canceled plans to launch its own VR hardware.
According to Reuters, the move comes as Tencent plans to cut jobs in its extended reality unit. The unit was formed in June 2022 and employs around 300 people.
Reuters claims that Tencent has created a concept for a ring-like handheld game controller for their VR hardware.
However, one of Reuters’ sources said that Tencent decided to change its strategy due to the significant investment required to compete in the VR market and the fact that it does not expect to make a profit until 2027.
Other sources also claim that Tencent has failed to produce a good number of games and other apps.
Although Tencent denied disbanding the extended reality unit, Tencent revealed to Reuters that they made some personnel changes after shifting their VR hardware development plans.
