Square Enix wants players to stop comparing FOAMSTARS to Splatoon

Speaking with VGC, Kosuke Okatani was asked if he was tired of hearing FOAMSTARS always being compared to Splatoon.

First of all, yes. There are a lot of comparisons on the internet, but also, we see on social media that people who actually play it see that it’s a completely different game and I hope you agree.

I feel that the mechanism to make the things you shoot stay on the field is very unique.

Okatani also joked by saying that it would be “a great honor” if fans end up giving the game nicknames like “Soulsborne” or “Metroidvania”. Square Enix later told VGC that they call FOAMSTARS an “online party shooter”.

On the other hand, Okatani was also asked about the concerns of players seeing FOAMSTARS as a live service game. Okatani then eased those concerns by revealing that FOAMSTARS will launch directly to PlayStation Plus on February 6, 2023.

“Of course, with a PvP game like this, the biggest risk for us is that not enough people play it. So we negotiated with Sony to include this game in PlayStation Plus.

Square Enix’s executive director of publishing strategy, Rich Briggs, called the PlayStation Plus deal an “easy win” for FOAMSTARS.

Briggs also noted that he hopes this will help the game quickly build the network of players it needs to survive.

This is a big part of how we were able to build the FOAMSTARS community in the first place – making sure that we were able to get all PlayStation Plus users to access the game for free for a whole month and that you can keep using it as long as you have a valid subscription. When we get the players feeling it, that’s going to be our community for the long term. Doing such a huge launch feels like an easy win.
