Involved in a Scandal, Sea of Stars Remove The Completionist NPC

Recently, the developers of Sea of Stars announced that they would be removing NPC YouTuber The Completionist. They made this announcement after the YouTuber was involved in a scandal.

Furthermore, the developer’s decision to replace the NPC makes sense. This is because the YouTuber was reportedly recently involved in a fraud case involving a charity.

On December 15, 2023, Thierry Boulanger of Sabotage Studios announced through DC that they would replace NPC Jirart the Constructionist. This comes after YouTuber The Completionist who Jirart is based on was reportedly involved in a charity fraud case.

In his post, Boulanger writes:

“A small patch will release on Steam and ship to consoles soon to replace the creator NPC in Mirth. We came to this decision after closely monitoring events over the past few weeks, and while it’s still ongoing, “it’s not our place to pass judgment, we make it a priority to maintain a positive and upbeat space that reflects the spirit of our intentions, whether creative or not.”

The post continues:

As always, we appreciate your support and trust the community to respect our decision while keeping the tone of the conversation in line with the essence of what makes our game and community what it is. Thank you.”

According to the Sea of Stars Wiki, in the aforementioned patch, Jirard has been replaced with a generic NPC named Bob, who does the same things as the original character.

Jirard ‘The Completionist’ Khalil is best known for his YouTube videos where he plays and reviews various games to 100% completion. The YouTuber is also well known for his charity work, particularly his work with the Open Hand Foundation and IndieLand charity events. Showcasing indie games and highlighting indie developers to raise money for charities focused on dementia research.

In November 2023, YouTubers Karl Jobst and SomeOrdinaryGamers uploaded a video accusing Khalil and his family of committing charity fraud with the donations he earned from IndieLand events. Following the accusations, Khalil uploaded a video to Twitter addressing the situation in which he wrote: “I want to assure you all that the funds we raised together through IndieLand and The Open Hand Foundation are safe.”
