Rumor: Developers don’t understand why PS5 Pro is needed

Recent reports have revealed that the developers attending GDC 2024 didn’t understand why the PS5 Pro was needed at this time.

This information was revealed by GamesIndustry.biz journalist Christopher Dring on the GI Microcast podcast. If you’re interested in hardware in the video game industry, you can check out our other articles here.

Developers don’t understand why PS5 Pro is needed?

According to Christopher Dring, who visited the 2024 Game Developers Conference (GDC), he revealed that the developers he spoke to “didn’t see the point” of the PS5 Pro.

“Honestly, I haven’t met a single person who understands what that [PS5 Pro] thing means,” Dring said.

“I mean, PS5 fans will get this upgrade, right? They’ve understood that this benefits Sony developers, but they don’t seem to feel like they need it, at least with the people I’ve talked to.”

Dring added, “They realize that they are not making the most of PS5. Some companies are also saying that it won’t grow the market and won’t have a positive impact.”

“This generation doesn’t seem to have started yet, let alone require an increase in the generation in the middle of it,” Dring concluded.

In March 2023, Insider Gaming reported that the PS5 Pro is targeted for release in late 2024.

On the other hand, Key to Gaming also reported in July 2023 that the PS5 Pro has the internal name “Project Trinity” and is specifically targeted for release in November 2024.

In March 2024, Moore’s Law is Dead and Insider Gaming leaked the specifications of the PS5 Pro, where the information was supported by several major media such as IGN, Eurogamer, and Digital Foundry.

Insider Gaming notes that the PS5 Pro is currently internally scheduled to release in the 2024 holiday season, but this schedule may change due to the lack of first-party games releasing on PS5 in 2024.
