Most Negative Overwatch 2 Reviews Come from China
For your information, Overwatch 2 currently has 100k reviews on Steam since its launch 3 days ago, of which 91% are negative. However, almost 2/3 of those reviews (63k) are written in Chinese with 97% of them being negative.
Of those reviews, many cited the lack of promised PvE content, harsh criticism over content pricing, and a perceived downgrade compared to Overwatch 1.
For your information, Blizzard and NetEase have ended the agreement regarding the distribution of Blizzar’s PC games in China, this led to the closure of Overwatch 2 and other titles since January 23, 2023.
Broadly speaking, gamers in China are disappointed that they lost their accounts and the opportunity to play on the national servers. As of now, there is no information regarding refunds from either side.
Naturally, the presence of Overwatch 2 on Steam makes the game an easy target to vent their frustrations in the eyes of the world.
What Chinese Gamers Say?
On a theoretical level, the launch of Overwatch 2 on Steam allows players in China to access the game. Moreover, this is an international version that Steam can access in China without a VPN.
Most gamers gave reviews criticizing Blizzard’s handling of the game, lack of national servers, and slow connections. This made the game the worst-rated game of all time on Steam.
In fact, Overwatch 2 managed to take the record from War of the Three Kingdoms, a Chinese card game developed by Youka.
What do Chinese Gamers Want?
Daniel Ahmad, one of the leading gaming journalists conducted a survey in March 2023 that looked at Blizzard’s PC players in China before and after the deactivation of some games.
They say that World of Warcraft and Overwatch were the most popular Blizzard games before the shutdown, both based on players and their playtime. Overwatch gamers most likely switched to similar games from other publishers after it closed.
In addition, over 40% said that they were considering playing the game on global servers using a VPN and the majority (53%) said that they started playing the game when it relaunched in China with national servers.
In the end, it’s clear that Overwatch was and still is a popular IP in China. But the chain of events starting from the shutdown at the beginning of the year has led to a sense of frustration that Overwatch 2 has fallen victim to.
