Netflix Builds New Game Studio in Finland
Netflix has announced their first studio built from scratch. Netflix built a new studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka serving as studio director.
Lastikka has been in the mobile gaming business for almost 19 years, having worked at Digital Chocolate and Electronic Arts (EA) before moving to Zynga.
Below is the full message from Amir Rahimi regarding the establishment of Netflix’s new studio:
Today, I’m excited to announce that we’re setting up an in-house game studio in Helsinki, Finland, with Marko Lastikka as studio director. This is another step in our vision to build a world-class game studio that will bring fun and highly engaging original games – with no ads and no in-app purchases – to our hundreds of millions of members around the world.
Why Helsinki? Helsinki is home to some of the best gaming talent in the world. This will be a game studio we build from scratch and our second game studio in Helsinki alongside Next Games which became part of Netflix earlier this year. Together with Night School Studio and Boss Fight Entertainment, the four studios, each with different strengths and areas of focus, will develop games that suit our members’ diverse tastes.
It’s still early days and we have a lot more work to do to deliver a great gaming experience on Netflix. Creating a game can take years, so I’m proud to see how we’ve continued to build the foundations of our game studio in our first year and look forward to sharing what we produce in the years to come.
