Naoki Yoshida: Final Fantasy XIV Will Not Be a Free-to-Play Game
Speaking with Eurogamer, Naoki Yoshida was asked if Square Enix would reach a point where the free trial for Final Fantasy XIV would be extended to its latest expansion.
I believe the free trial will continue to be expanded, but we have no plans to make the client itself free at this time. As a huge amount of time and money has been invested in the expansion packs, the revenue from selling the expansion packs themselves is still very important to continue expanding at this scale. We want to continue to strive for excellence from a business standpoint and also continue to create a lot of content for people to enjoy.

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail will release for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4, and PC in fall 2023.
