Phil Spencer: Metaverse Is a Poorly Constructed Video Game

Speaking at WSJ Tech Live 2022, Phil Spencer described the metaverse as a “poorly constructed video game”.

Video game creators have an uncanny ability to build interesting worlds that we want to spend time in. For me, building a metaverse that looks like a meeting room… I just find that it’s not a place to spend most of my time.

Spencer isn’t the only one pushing back on this idea of the metaverse. Snap CEO Evan Spiegel defined the metaverse as “living inside a computer” and followed it up by saying, “The last thing I want to do when I get home from work at the end of a long day is live inside a computer.”

Apple’s SVP of worldwide marketing, Greg Joswiak, said that metaverse is “a word I would never use”. Disney CEO Bob Chapek said that the company tends to “not use” the word metaverse “because for us, it’s a big, broad term. For us, it’s next-generation storytelling”.

Despite his comments about the metaverse, Spencer feels that the concept will change. “I was flirting a bit with [mengatakan itu]bad video games. I just think we’re still early,” said Spencer.

But he feels that, over time, the metaverse “will end up looking more like a video game than some of the models I see for the metaverse right now”.
