Tencent developing Palworld-style mobile game?

Bloomberg reports that the teams at TiMi Studio Group and LightSpeed Studios are building Palworld-style mobile games. The games combine open world, survival and crafting elements with raising virtual pets.

According to Bloomberg, Tencent is now incubating several internal projects to compete with NetEase’s games.

Bloomberg also added that creating a game like Palworld can be done relatively quickly and result in instant monetization, especially this when backed by Tencent’s vast promotional resources and reach.

In January 2024, Reuters reported that Tencent was worried about losing its status as the world’s largest gaming company.

Pocket Pair announced in February 2024 that Palworld had sold 15 million copies worldwide on the Steam platform.

In March 2024, Reuters also reported that Tencent launched the “Spring Bamboo Shoots Project”, an initiative to incubate internal projects with new gameplay and offered a budget of up to US$42 million for each project.
