Cliff Bleszinski said that he considered making Gears of War 4 with a first-person perspective before being bought by Microsoft.

When asked about Epic Games‘ vision for Gears of War 4 before the IP was sold, Cliff Bleszinski told XboxEra:
Yes, I can say that I would like to consider using a first-person perspective.

While Bleszinski didn’t elaborate on her ideas for Gears of War 4, it would mark a major change in a franchise that has used a third-person perspective since its inception.
Bleszinski also claims that when Microsoft took over the IP, focusing on returning Gears of War to its horror roots was key for them.
That was Phil Spencer’s main note when Microsoft acquired the IP. When talking to Rod Ferguson, he said, ‘Let’s get back to the horror stuff’.

Bleszinski served as the lead designer in the Gears of War franchise for 20 years at Epic Games. In 2012, he left the company one year after the release of Gear of War 3 and 2 years before Microsoft purchased the IP.
