Square Enix: Early Sales of Final Fantasy XVI Very Strong

Square Enix insists that early sales of Final Fantasy XVI are “very strong” and that the game has sold well considering the number of PS5 owners.

Square Enix: Early Sales of Final Fantasy XVI Very Strong

Two weeks ago, a debate within the Final Fantasy community emerged after being sparked by an article by Bloomberg that showed that sales of Final Fantasy XVI in Japan plummeted in the second week after its launch.

In its report, Bloomberg claims that early sales of Final Fantasy XVI have “lagged” behind Final Fantasy XV and Square Enix itself is still “grappling with weak momentum” on its flagship franchise.

In a statement to IGN, Square Enix pointed out the difference in the PS4 player base when Final Fantasy VII Remake launched in April 2020 and the PS5 player base when Final Fantasy XVI launched in June 2023.

With 38 million PS5 consoles shipped globally (as of March 31, 2023), sales of Final Fantasy XVI surpassed 3 million copies worldwide days after its launch on June 22, 2023.

Considering the famous sales figures of Final Fantasy VII Remake and the difference in the size of the PS4 install base at the time of the game’s launch, we can see that the install rate of Final Fantasy XVI is very high, considering the PS5 install base.

Square Enix considers the early sales results of Final Fantasy XVI to be very strong and we will continue to undertake various initiatives to encourage more people to play the game.

However, IGN sources familiar with the performance of Final Fantasy XVI provided separate confirmation of Bloomberg’s claim that the game’s sales have indeed slowed down since its launch, but the game has not been considered a “disaster” as many have claimed.

One of IGN’s sources points to recent comments from Naoki Yoshida that Final Fantasy XVI DLC may be coming soon and the game will still hold its sales momentum later.
