Hideaki Itsuno: Dragon’s Dogma 2 Takes Inspiration from GTA V

Speaking with VGC, Hideaki Itsuno was asked if any elements from other games inspired the development of Dragon’s Dogma 2, given how far the fantasy RPG genre has come in the decade since the first game.

Itsuno replied that Capcom’s main focus was to develop the original game with features that were not possible at the time.

However, in terms of other games that inspired Capcom, Itsuno revealed that it wasn’t games with elements of fantasy RPGs, but Grand Theft Auto V that had the most impact on the development of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

We mostly just wanted to take things that we couldn’t achieve in Dragon’s Dogma at the time it launched, whether it was due to lack of time or pushing the limits of the hardware that existed at the time. So, the main inspiration was ourselves and finally being able to achieve what we wanted on the current generation of consoles.

But if I had to choose one other game that came out at that time, I would choose Grand Theft Auto V. I quite admired how they were able to create a world where NPCs lived their lives independently of the player. All kinds of interesting emergent behaviors can happen whenever you explore the city and all kinds of freak accidents feel like they’re going to happen, whether you’re there or not. The feeling of a living world is something I tried to achieve in Dragon’s Dogma 2.
