Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition was originally developed by Square Enix due to concerns about the original game being unplayable.
This information was revealed by Koichiro Sakamoto in Square Enix’s latest interview. If you are interested in Square Enix games, you can check out our other articles here.
Chrono Cross Gets Remastered Because of Dev. Worried the Original Version Wouldn’t Be Playable
According to Square Enix’s published interview with the development team (via GamesRadar), the remaster was originally started as a project to celebrate Chrono Cross’ 20th anniversary in 2019. Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition was finally released in 2022.
When this project launches, Chrono Cross probably won’t be playable. There is a Game Archive service on PS3 that allows you to play PS1 games. But PS4 is already on the market.
We didn’t know at the time if PS4 would also have a Game Archive service. It seemed like Chrono Cross was no longer playable. So, a remaster project was created. That was the background.

The PS4 launched in 2013, this means the project took almost 10 years to complete despite being more of an HD remaster than a remake.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition is available for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam).
