Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II disc contains only 72 MB, the remaining 150 GB must be downloaded

Recent reports have revealed that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II disc contains only 72 MB, with the remaining said to be 150 GB having to be downloaded online.

This information was first published by Eurogamer. If you’re interested in Activision and Infinity Ward games, you can check out our other articles here.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II disc has a size of 72 MB?

Eurogamer reports that physical disc of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II began to be sent around the world and players were shocked that the tapes only contained 72 MB of data. Instead, owners have to download the entire game digitally which can take up as much as 150 GB of space on the PS5.

With these tapes in place, Activision is effectively shipping discs of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II that will always have to be connected to the internet to download the data.

Over the past few years, instances like this have drawn widespread criticism, specifically because they can hinder game preservation, force firmware updates, and overall, push owners towards DRM versions of games that may not work properly for years into the future.

While day-one patches are relatively normal for fixing games, as Lance McDonald pointed out on Twitter, there’s a big difference between day-one patches to fix things and games that aren’t on the disc.

While the base game is around 35 GB, the day one patch has inflated the size of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II to 150 GB on PS5. The size does not include Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 which will be released in November 2022.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is available for PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam, Battle.net).
